I learned about generator functions in JS. They can be paused and resumed at any moment. There was an example of a continuously running function which reminded me about lazy evaluation in Haskell. The function only gives you a value when you ask for it.

I learned about Tuples in Python today, which basically are immutable Lists (Arrays).

Interesting to see how different languages approach the same concepts. In Ruby, you can use freeze to make an object immutable, and in Python, you have to use another type.

I might be spoiled by working with Ruby & Rails exclusively in the back-end for the last couple of years but for now, I prefer the Ruby way 😜

I've been learning about a very nice Rails gem noticed. It's a special gem for notifications inside the Rails apps. The author did a great job and cover everything in docs and a screencast. Love the gem and the fact that most of the things are done in Rails way.

And hence the notifications on Learning Story is live 🎉🎉🎉

I learned about making custom Iterators in JS and there are 3 options in the spec. One for getting the next value, for pausing the iteration, and for handling errors.

Picked up learning Python again! 🎉
Thanks for nudging me Learning Story!

Today was a good day for surfing. It's still a bit windy but good enough to catch some waves and have fun. I've started learning more about this particular spot and see whether it's ridable or not just by looking on the water.
Another thing I've learned that you can't really rely on the broadcast. Even MSW is showing incorrect information. Better to just check the cameras or go on the spot.

Spot: Batu Bolong
Time: 8am-10am
Stars: 3 stars on MSW
Wind: 11-12mph, onshore
Swell: 4ft/9sec, high - middle tide. 600-650kJ

Fun fact I learned from Kevin Cunningham: If you put the word "box" in a GitHub repo address before the '.com'. It launches you into a CodeSandbox session with the code of that repo ready for you to play around with.

Today I learned that you can chain the parameters in URL with ";" instead of "&".

I still prefer "&" though!

I've been learning grid today to improve the design of Learning Story. I'm usually using flex boxes for everything but grids are so amazing.
It's so much easier to split the page into nice columns and manage them as you wish.
grid-template-columns: repeat(12, minmax(0, 1fr));

And it's especially powerful for mobile views because you can set each block to fill the needed amount of columns:
grid-column: span 2 / span 2;

I know I am slowpoke in CSS but I wish I've been using them before but not only flex boxes 😃

I learned a lot about SEO for blogging today (Blogging for devs workshop). It gave me some nice ideas: I am gonna edit the posts I published at the hexdevs blog from a SEO perspective, let's see how it goes :)

I learned how to use SharedArrayBuffers with WASM for the first time today in Chrome (building a simple video conversion app in the browser). I'm excited about the use-cases SABs unlock, but also think it is important we get the security story right so that more browser vendors feel comfortable supporting them. Ideally things shouldn't be Chrome only :)

I learned about Iterators and Iterables in JS. The for..of loop already uses them under the hood and the 'Symbol.iterator' is a "well-known" symbol in JS that's used to make an iterator out of an object.

Awesome surfing session today. I've caught 3 proper waves and 2 small ones. It was a bit crowded at first but much better after 9 am.

Spot: Batu Bolong
Time: 8am-10am
Stars: 2 stars on MSW
Wind: 3-6mph, onshore/offshore
Swell: 3.5-4ft/11sec, middle tide. 310-350kJ
